Unit 3 Pastel Spanish Moon Moth

Master: Maria Merian

Current: Lindsey Kustusch

This piece was inspired by one of my favorite moth species which is the Spanish moon moth. I chose Maria Merian as my master artist because of her love for butterfly studies. All of Marias artwork consists of different butterfly and moth speciels. I chose Lindsey K because of her love also for butterfly studies and art style which I really enjoy.

What went well: I think something that was fairly easy to do was the mixing of colors. Through the process I learned different layering techniques as you can kind of see from the left to the right wing.

My struggles: I have never worked with oil pastels before so every part of the piece did have a set back. One of the biggest issues I had dealt with was blending out the black and the left wing. I used a paper towel after layering colors but the pastel would either rub off in the black or be too chunky on the paper. I then scraped it off a few times but after a while it was better. Another struggle I had was the body at the top. I wasn't sure how to approach the edge of the body with having the fur slightly show over or under the wings.
